Education & Career in Medicine Through Vedic Astrology: Role of Ashwini, Mula, Hasta & Shatabhisha Nakshatras – A Research Study
In Indian astrology, the most challenging test for the astrologer is to find the line of education and profession. Recently, while learning Brihat Samhita Chapter 10[Saturn’s Transit] [Shlokas 9 and 17] and Chapter 15[Stellar Rulership] [Shlokas 7, 12, 17, 26], clues about the medical profession were noted. In the backdrop of the recent NEET controversy due to the leak of the examination paper, it is the duty of an astrologer to help students in the choice of profession.

As per the indicated references:
Ashwini (Divine Physicians)
Chitra (Ophthalmic Physicians)
Ashlesha (Poison/Medicine, Physicians)
Mula (Physicians, medicines)
Hasta (Physicians)
Shatabhisha (Physicians)
· As per Indian astrology, the 5th house is the house of education by choice and the 10th house is the house of profession. To test the above principles, the horoscopes of several doctors were examined as follows:

Case 1: He was the H.O.D. of Emergency in a very prestigious institute in New Delhi, near Rashtrapati Bhavan, and is still serving the Central Government. The 10th lord and 5th lord Mars is placed in the 10th house in Ashwini Nakshatra (Divine Physicians) in the Rashi Chart.

The 9th lord[5th from 5th House] Mars is in Hasta Nakshatra (Physician), and the 7th lord (10th from the 10th house) Saturn is in the 5th house in Mula Nakshatra (Physicians, Medicine). Case 9: A Leading ENT surgeon. The 5th lord Jupiter is in the Nakshatra of Shatabhisha (Physicians), aspecting the 10th house of occupation. Mars and Saturn are under sign exchange, with as Mars in Capricorn and Saturn in Scorpio.

Case 10: A general practitioner formerly in the Nephrology department of a leading hospital in New Delhi . Moon is in Hasta in the 5th house (Physicians), aspecting the 10th lord Saturn in the 11th house. Mars, the 7th lord (10th from the 10th house), is also in Chitra (Physicians).

Case 11: A leading gastroenterologists in Malaysia who passed away last year. Jupiter and Sun are in the 10th house in Ashlesha Nakshtra (Poison, Physician) and the 5th lord Saturn is in Nakshatra exchange with Mercury in the 10th house (Saturn in Revati and Mercury in Pushya) so the 5th lord is indirectly in the 10th house conjunct Sun and Jupiter. Moon, the 10th lord, is under sign exchange with the 11th lord Sun.

Case 12: A leading Surgeon in a very prestigious hospital. Saturn is in the 10th house [Aries, Ashwini ] under sign exchange with Mars[Capricorn], the 5th and 10th lord, in Ashwini Nakshatra (Physician).

Case 13: A much respected gynecologist in a government hospital of New Delhi. The 5th lord Jupiter is in Hasta Nakshatra (Physician) in 2nd House aspecting the 10th house.

Case 14: A high ranking gynaecologist in a prestigious government hospital in New Delhi. Mars as Lagna lord[9th from the 5th House] is in the 9th house (5th from the 5th house) in Ashlesha (Poison, Physician) and Saturn, the Karaka for the 10th house, is in the 6th house of disease and service in Ashwini (Divine Physicians).

Case 15: Class 1 officer, a very efficient doctor with central government. The 5th lord Jupiter is in Mula Nakshtra (Physician , Medicine ) aspecting the 10th house.

Case 16: A very respected and successful orthopedic surgeon. The 5th lord Jupiter is in Mula Nakshatra (Physicians, Medicines) aspecting the 10th house and 10th Lord Sun.

Case 17: An Orthopedic Surgeon. None of the planets in the Rashi Chart is in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Chitra, Mula, Hasta or Shatabhisha. In the Navamsa (D-9), Mercury is in Libra. Since Navamsa is the 9th part of the Rashi Chart and each sign and house represents only 3°20', it falls in Chitra Nakshatra (Physician) as the first 3°20' of Libra is Chitra Nakshatra. Mercury the 5th Lord of Rashi Chart is in Libra in Navamsa . Mercury the 5th Lord of Rashi Chart is conjunct with 10th Lord Mars in 11th House in D-1.

Case 18: A Postgraduate Lady Doctor settled in the U.S.A. No planet is in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Chitra, Mula or Hasta in the Rashi Chart. In the D-9, the 5th lord Mercury of Rashi Chart is in Aries[Ashwini]. As Navamsa is the 9th division of the Rashi chart, where each sign is subdivided into only 3°20', the initial 3°20' of Aries falls in Ashwini Nakshatra (Divine Physicians). In this chart, Saturn — a key karaka for the 10th house — is placed in Libra in the Navamsa, which falls in Chitra Nakshatra (Physician).I consider planets placed in Aries (Ashwini), Libra (Chitra), and Sagittarius (Mula) in the Navamsa chart as strong indicators for a medical career. However, I do not subscribe to the common practice adopted by most software programs of treating the 3°20' Navamsa division as a full 30° sign, which often results in showing different Nakshatras.
Conclusion:
These case studies clearly show that the medical profession is strongly indicated when the lords of the 5th house (education) and 10th house (career), or planets connected to them, are placed in the special medical Nakshatras — Ashwini, Ashlesha, Chitra, Mula, Hasta, and Shatabhisha. The principle of Bhavat Bhavam (7th house as 10th from 10th, and 9th house as 5th from 5th) is also very useful in these charts. Even when these connections are not seen in the main birth chart (Rashi), they often appear clearly in the Navamsa (D-9) chart.
It is also observed that Mars-Saturn interaction (energy + iron instruments) frequently appears in the charts of general surgeons, ENT surgeons while Jupiter’s [Advice] influence on the 10th house is prominent in the charts of consultant physicians and gynaecologists. This confirms that these six Nakshatras mentioned in Brihat Samhita have a strong classical link with the medical profession and act as reliable indicators for choosing medicine as a career.
